Unless you have been on a deserted island, you probably already know that Facebook is HUGE! Not only is it a place to hang out and find out what your friends and family are up to, more businesses are seeing the potential and are flocking to use Facebook as a tool to develop their presence and build their client base.

Facebook has three ways that you can build a presence for you or your business: a profile, a fan page and a group.So many people get confused about which one to use but it is important to get this right from the beginning because it can be difficult to change later on.

To have a page or group, you must have a profile but all three of these ways provide for different marketing and networking opportunities.

1. Profile

Profiles are for individuals.

One of the most common mistakes I see on Facebook is when a business starting out creates a Facebook profile under their business name when they should be making a Facebook Fan Page.

While you can still use your profile to connect and develop relationships with clients or potential clients, they are for you as an individual and not your business name. In saying that I have found my personal profile to be hugely important tool for building relationships with prospects. People will do business with people they like and trust and bringing prospects over to your personal profile is a perfect way to develop that trust and for them to get to know you better.

There certainly are some pro’s in setting up a profile for your business but the biggest problem with this is that it is against Facebook’s terms and conditions and could get your account suspended…not good for business!

Some other disadvantages are that you can only reach 5000 friends, there are no analytics, limited marketing opportunities and users have to add you as a friend.

2. Fanpage

Fanpages are for Businesses, Bands, Brands, Famous Personalities and more and have the ability to market to thousands, even millions of potential clients.

Now you have a profile, you can set up a Fanpage. Actually, you can set up several fanpages. It is the industry standard and “correct” way to establish your business’s presence

You can also use Facebook widgets and like boxes to link your Page to your website and blog.

A great thing about Facebook pages is that you can completely customise them, you can also use various apps for competitions, for clients to contact you, or even make an order directly from your Facebook page.

3. Groups

Facebook groups are like online clubs where the rules and regulations differ with each group. The administrator decides who joins and they can decide if it is open to all, admin approval required or invite only. They are the place for small group communication and for people to share their common interests, interact and express their opinion.

Like with Pages, new posts by a group are included in the News Feeds of its members and members can interact and share with one another from the group. They are more like a community and it is easier to develop relationships with people in a group as compared to a page.

Groups can also serve as an extremely effective marketing tool and a huge advantage is that you can do bulk messaging to the group members. Smart businesses and entrepreneurs can use them for lead generation or business research as well as team building.

There you have it, three ways you can develop your presence on Facebook that will enable you to build your potential client base, sales and profits. They can all be used in different ways but used correctly, all three can be an excellent tool for marketing and networking opportunities for your business.
