We are human beings, not human doings, yet so much of our time can be spent in ‘doing’ mode rather than ‘being’. We can get so caught up in the things we have to do, that we stop simply being who we were created to be.
Don’t get me wrong, I believe that ‘doing’ things for our work from home business is important, there is a lot of value in ‘doing’…we need to have clear goals, make ‘to do’ lists, get organised, manage our time well, plan ahead etc. However, when we get caught up in habitual schedules of working, parenting, eating and sleeping, our lives become a succession of routines and an imbalance can occur.
Often, we get caught up in the act of doing because it can be easier. We can quantify what we do–the results are right there to see, count and judge. We can count how many sales we’ve made, we can tick off those things on our ‘to do’ list, we can work out if we have achieved our goals, we can see when the house is clean and tidy. We can also see the results of not doing, such as not achieving our goals, the full “to-do” list of things that still need to be done, the dishes in sink, or the bed that hasn’t been made.
When I first started my work from home business, I was very caught up on doing but then I started to see the cracks appear because I wasn’t devoting enough time to the equally important mode of “being’.
The problem with focusing on the doing, is that when challenges come, when we have failures or set backs, when things don’t go to plan…we haven’t developed that Plan ‘be’ in our lives.
So, what does ‘being’ mean?
Being is hard to define because it can be so different for everyone, but generally, it means to nurture and develop that inner part of ourselves, our spirit. It is our belief system, our mindsets and our thoughts. Our beliefs and thoughts are powerful because they are the blueprint for our lives and will effect everything we do and how we perceive and handle obstacles that come up in our lives. We all face fears, obstacles, challenges and failures but it is how we respond to these things that will determine our success. Too many times, people walk away from their dreams because they haven’t spent enough time being and they see quitting as an easy alternative.
We cannot control the past or the future; we only have control over the present moment. It is our choice to either fill all of life’s moments with doing and acquiring or to take some time to develop, grow and change some of those mindsets that are going to hold us back. By opening ourselves to the realisation that we are much more than what we do, we begin living passionately instead of merely existing.
Our spirit is where we discover our passions, dreams, desires and purpose. This is the part that defines who you are in the world and not what you do. The clearer you are, the more power you have to make it happen.
When life pushes you back…the real question is who are you really?
Spend some time on ‘Plan Be’ today…believe me it will be worth it!!
