What is Wellness?

You may have heard a lot of people talking about wellness but what is it? Its not just about going to some expensive wellness retreat for a few days to sort you out, it is about creating a lifestyle that fully embraces life and also about having a constant pursuit of living life to it’s fullest!!

There doesn’t seem to be one universal definition for it but most definitions include living in a state of well-being.

This definition of wellness seems to imply that wellness is a lifestyle choice. And it defines wellness to include not just being healthy physically but embraces a holistic concept of health that encompasses our whole being – body, mind and spirit.

  • Wellness generally means a healthy balance of the mind, body and spirit that results in an overall feeling of well-being.

The determinants of wellness are: feeling of control of destiny, health practices, spirituality, family, environment, work, money and security, health services, social support and leisure.

Wellness is considered to be an active process of becoming aware of and learning to make choices (healthy choices) that lead toward a longer and more successful existence. We have many opportunities in life to make choices, even indecision is a choice, not a good one but it still is a choice. One thing I learned from an early age was to watch the choices other people made and take note of the consequences that came from that choice.

If you want to be successful in business, watch what people are doing who are successful in business. If you want to be fit and healthy, watch what people do to be fit and healthy. If you want to lose weight, find out how others have lost weight. These people make certain choices that determine their destiny. They have moved past fear to make changes to live life to the fullest.

Spiritual wellness is striving for a sense of satisfaction and confidence with personal spiritual beliefs. Individuals aim to increase their understanding of the values, ethics, and beliefs, which can add direction to their lives.  They have a growing set of beliefs that can help support them mentally and emotionally.  There is an overall sense of well-being, peace, and connectedness that helps them find meaning in life.
Social/Family wellness places great value on cultivating good realtionships with family and freinds. It encourages contributing to one’s environment and community.
Occupational Wellness is about finding purpose in the work that you do or making positive choices to move in the direction of your dreams.
We need to aim for balance for our well-being. It is a wheel because if one of these areas is not function properly, it affects the overall performance.
The hub of the wheel will always be PURPOSE!
