Diets don’t work!

The constant battle of the bulge seems to be something most of us experience. With pregnancy, getting older (you have to be over 35 to get that) and our busy lifestyles we seem to be fighting a never-ending battle!

Were not alone… did you know that 42% of Australian women and 17% of Australian men are on a diet? Let’s face it, very few of us haven’t been on a “diet” at some point in our lives!

Little do they realise, for most of them, their attempts to lose weight will be ultimately destined for failure. Come one…how many of us have gone on a diet only to put it all back on again?

The shocking truth is that health experts estimate as little as 2% of dieters manage to maintain lasting weight loss results. The rest of us end up regaining the lost weight within 2-3 years and come out the other side being just as heavy – if not heavier – than when we started!

It’s no secret that as a nation our waistlines are expanding…rapidly…but statistics confirm the enormity of our nation’s expanding weight problem. Get ready for it – 1 in every 2 adults are now overweight or obese!!

While I’m sure we are all aware of the negative self-image that can result from that muffin-top (going shopping for a swimming costume can be torture!), but few of us stop to think about the heavy toll those extra kilos can put on our health. Researchers warn us that excess body fat, not only looks bad, but it can be downright dangerous, leading to a whole heap of health problems.

Why are we getting fatter?

Australians are spending $1 million a day on weight loss attempts…so why is the obesity crisis continuing to get worse?? What is making us fat, and how can we turn the fat switch off to maintain a healthy weight for life?

Part of the answer lies in the fact that losing body weight usually sacrifices so much more than just that unwanted fat!

All around the world people have been programmed to measure their weight-management success in terms of kilos…our scales have become our best friend! The Biggest Loser show has a lot to be answerable for 🙂

Not only is that an outdated way of looking at it, but it’s also scientifically inaccurate and inefficient.

But did you know that in an average weight-loss plan, approximately half of the kilos you shed will consist of fat, while the other half will come from lean muscle mass. That’s right…half of what you are losing is muscle!

Lean muscle is important, not only because it helps you to maintain body strength, but because it also keeps your metabolism high, allowing you to burn more calories.

There’s the key – if a significant amount of lean muscle is lost during the dieting process, it will be considerably harder for you to shift any creeping weight gain the next time around since there is now less muscle to keep the metabolism high.

Scales or Tape Measure

Let’s think about this logically for a second: lean muscle is firm, tight and flat while fat is bulky and soft. On average, fat takes up approximately twenty percent more space per kilogram than muscle does. So if you try to measure your success by simply standing on the scales you will not be getting an accurate measurement of the fat lost.

So break up with your scales, and make the tape measure your best friend…then you will really see how much fat you are losing!
